Pewter Vases & Bowls

Pewter is an alloy that consists of 92% tin. Tin is the most valuable of the non-precious metals and pewter is often used to create jewellery, ornaments and luxury items. In the past, lead was part of the alloy, but modern pewter is lead free. Tin is very mealleable, allowing it to be handcrafted by time-served pewterers to create beautiful items, both decorative and practical.

Pewter was valued by the Ancient Egyptians and was extensively used in the villas of the Romans. Through mediaeval times the popularity of pewter grew; used initially for chalices and ecclesiastical items, it was increasingly used in the manufacture of tableware, vessels, utensils and much more. As other materials were developed, such as ceramics and stainless steel, pewter became less common until today it is used solely as a luxury metal, valued for its sheen - more refined than stainless steel, easier to care for than silver (and not as expensive!).
Pewter is easy to engrave, ideal as a gift, perfect to comemorate an anniversary or special occasion, and is durable, tactile and eye-catching.

Pewter can be easily cared for by simply washing in hot, soapy water and drying with a soft cloth. If, over time, the pewter becomes dull, it can be cleaned with a metal polish before washing. Always polish in straight lines, not circles, for best results. Do not place in the dishwasher, as this will cause the pewter to become dull.
